i know very few people are going to care about this post, but work is super slow today, it’s midway through friday, and i’m getting pretty bored. so really, there’s no better time to rant about my fantasy baseball team. as a disclaimer, i’m not going to explain any of the rules of fantasy baseball or how the whole thing works, so you’re either going to get it, or you’re going to stop reading. right now.
my fantasy baseball team currently sits in seventh place out of eight teams. it’s been a rough start to the season to say the least. pitching-wise, i’ve been doing alright. i lead the league in wins and strikeouts, and i’m in the top half in most of the other pitching categories, but the achillies heel of my team has been my offense.
our league uses the following offensive categories for offense: runs, home runs, rbi, sb, avg. i currently rank dead last in every single category except one, and that category is stolen bases. so it’s not even a “real” offensive category. basically, my team has been terrible.
here’s an even more indepth analysis. my team has scored 121 runs. the next closest team to me has scored 136. my team has hit 118 rbi. the next closest team has hit 129. but here’s the most damning stat of all. my team has hit an ugly .228 so far. the next closest team? .249. for those doing the math, that’s a 21 point difference.
now, for a real baseball team, hitting .228 is horrible. but this is supposed to be a FANTASY team. it’s almost like you’re picking an all-star team! and yet my team can’t even hit above .230!
okay, i just looked it up online and my team would currently be hitting better than only two other teams in major league baseball: the nationals and the padres. mind you, not only are these two teams known for their inability to hit, but they also have PITCHERS bat every single game. so my lineup is barely better than two already offensively-challenged teams that also use PITCHERS as hitters!
so what am i doing wrong, you ask? excellent question.
here’s my team as it stands now.
c alex avila, 1b adam dunn, 2b dan uggla, ss troy tulowitzki, 3b david wright, of hunter pence, of colby rasmus, of corey hart, util aubrey huff, util jason bay, and my bench has delmon young (who’s on the dl right now). now look, i know this lineup isn’t exactly going to strike fear in an opposing team’s heart, but still, the numbers my team has put up are terrible. keep in mind, i only recently added avila, hart, and bay after dropping geovany soto, alex rios, and vernon wells respectively, three guys this year who, for lack of a better term, have SUCKED this year. but what does it say when i’m counting on a catcher who has no proven track record, an outfielder who just recently came off the dl and has struggled since he came back, and another outfielder who is widely accepted as overrated? whatever it means, it can’t be good.
okay, all this talk drove me over the edge and i just dropped huff and added martin prado. it’s official. i’m reallllly scrapping now to try and save this season before i turn into the guy in the league who gives up all hope and only checks his team to rotate the players. shoot me in the face.
