as most of you know, i am a huge giants fan. so needless to say that when my boys won the world series last fall, i was ecstatic. i always told people that if i could only witness one championship in my lifetime, it would be a giants world series. mission accomplished.
winning something as monumental as a championship means many things, most notably that you can take pride and joy in your team’s success and no one can touch you because you are the ultimate winners. but it also means something else: you are going to be spending money.
as a fan, i wanted to commemorate this moment. the last time the giants won the world series was in 1954. and not to express a lack of faith in my team, but who knows when this will happen again? you have to seize the moment. so that means buying a bunch of stuff that will forever remind you of your moment of glory.
now i’m not really a guy who spends a whole lot of money on memorabilia. in fact, prior to the world series championship, i probably bought two things giants related in the past three years or so (not including tickets to games): a giants hat and a giants jacket. not too bad, right? pretty modest if you ask me.
but since the world series? this is what i’ve bought: a giants world series hat, the world series dvd/blu-ray, a commemorative sports illustrated, a world series sweatshirt (not for me, for annie), a matt cain shirt, and i’m about to buy a giants hat with the gold ‘sf’ logo that they wore when they got their world series rings. and this isn’t even counting the ticket i bought for game two of the world series at probably close to three times face value.
and it’s sort of funny. i feel kind of stupid… but at the same time, i don’t regret any of it. and i guess that’s what sports can do to you. your pride and emotions sometimes get the best of you and even when you realize you might be going a bit overboard, it still doesn’t matter.
okay, maybe it is a little stupid. go giants.
